how to : be your best self

There are tricks to being your ultimate self. Here are some of mine.

1. Don’t always choose the easy road
Being positive, productive and energetic is a lot harder than being lazy and uninspired. Make an effort to be that breath of fresh air in the room – trust me when I say, everybody needs it. And though it might be hard work, I promise you that it’s worth it. I have met the most amazing people I know this way.

2. Thrive at work
Ha. Funny. No, but seriously, having a career that you feel drives you, motivates you leaves you feeling like you matter – is important. In my morning pages the other day, I went on about the importance about being important :

If you’re not feeling your current gig, make the change.

3. Things that make you smile do that for a reason
Missing dance classes?  Is your happy place alone with a really great book, and a glass of red? Dying to go to Coachella? Really want to do that juice cleanse – just because it makes you feel good? Then do that. Just that. I am one of those people who compromise what I really want in order to please others, and trust me when I say – life is too short. Now, I am not telling you to go and be an asshole, but if you’re like me – it’s easy to put others in front of yourself. There is a balance.

4. Meditate
I bet you didn’t see this one coming. Meditate does not mean Brain Wave Studios. Meditate can mean beach time, getting a head massage by someone you love, getting thoughts out of your head and onto a piece of paper. Whatever works for you, and whatever means switching off from the every day. It will make you a better person.

5. Be happy
Put yourself in places which you know are good for you. If something doesn’t feel right, you don’t want to do what everyone else is doing, or you use get off in different ways than your friends, find yourself the time to do that. You’ll find out who your true friends are very quickly, and if that means giving up the boozy Thursday night after works for that yoga class, then so be it.
